Anthropology, as a discipline, is uniquely positioned to explore sensitive topics that challenge societal norms and provoke deep ethical questions. Anthropology provides critical tools for understanding complex issues within their cultural contexts. Sensitive topics such as sexuality, identity, and morality demand careful navigation to foster meaningful dialogue and ethical research.
The SexAFIN project investigates what children and teens understand about sexuality and how adults—teachers and families—support them through this process. Initiated in 2017, the project emerged at a time when Spain lacked a specific law for sex education, which was only introduced in 2022. Researching children and sexuality remains a sensitive topic, primarily due to Western cultural notions of childhood as innocent and asexual. Addressing issues such as touching and self-touchings, LGBTQIA+ identities, or pornography often provokes social and educational moral panics, complicating dialogue and research efforts.
This course aims to share the experiences and insights gained from the SexAFIN project to explore the potential of anthropology in addressing sensitive and challenging topics. Through critical reflection, students will examine how anthropological methods can foster meaningful conversations and advance understanding in areas that are often fraught with ethical and societal tensions.
