Title |
VA: Theories and Methods for the Study of Ceramics and Introduction to Mesopotamian Pottery |
Description |
Ceramics are the most common finds in archaeological excavations, and can provide a wide range of information on chronology, material culture, cultural areas, production networks, trade, and so on.
The first part of the seminar will present the various approaches and methods used to study ceramics: typology, chaîne opératoire, archaeometry, functional analysis, etc. Although the case studies used to illustrate these points correspond to ancient Mesopotamian examples, the theories and methods presented can be applied to any region or period.
The second part of the seminar will be an introduction to the pottery of ancient Mesopotamia, from the Early Chalcolithic to the Iron Age (7th-1st mill. BC). |
