Title Polychromy in Archaeology – Bronze Age Mesopotamian, Minoan, and Mycenaean Cultures.
Description This seminar provides fundamental knowledge about polychromy – the use of multiple colours – in the art and material culture of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations of the Aegean region, as well as the Bronze Age cultures of Mesopotamia. Particular emphasis is placed on the technical, aesthetic, and symbolic aspects of colour design, explored based on literary sources.

Focus Areas:

- Polychromy in Mesopotamian Art: Examination of the use of colours in artworks and architectural decorations in Mesopotamia during the Bronze Age, explicitly focusing on wall paintings and ornamental designs.

- Polychromy in Minoan and Mycenaean Art: Analysis of wall paintings in Crete and the Greek mainland, including the techniques and materials used to create frescoes. Their cultural and ritual significance in palace and religious contexts is also considered.

- Minerals and Pigments: Investigation of the natural resources used for pigment production, such as ochre, malachite, and lapis lazuli. This also includes the process of material preparation and their application on various media to create polychrome effects.
A workshop with practical and theoretical components will possibly be held. Implementation depends on funding availability,
