Title Computerized environments in understanding and treating mental health disorders
Description Computerized environments allow to confront participants and patients with highly standardized but yet lifelike situations where they can often interact relatively naturalistically. Such environments are used in the treatment of mental health problems but also to collect cognitive, behavioral and emotional responses (e.g., body, head and eye movements, facial expressions, physiological reactions), typically with the goal to monitor treatment processes or to gain basic insights into maladaptive processes in psychopathology. Research topics addressed using such environments include cognitive and attention biases, cognitive flexibility, decision-making or reward processing. Computerized environments can be presented on traditional smartphone or computer screens (as in the game “SPARX” used in the treatment of depression) or in virtual or augmented reality (e.g., in assessing behavioral maladaptations to social situations in socially anxious individuals, or in mitigating loneliness using social virtual reality setups). In this seminar we will get to know a range of such environments and their use in experimental clinical research. We will discuss how computerized environments may further enhance clinical research and practice as underlying technologies become more accessible.
