Title Teaching in English with Confidence: Optimizing Use of English as a Medium of Education
Description Mastery of English as a medium of education (EME) is essential to international and academic careers. This practical course for early-career researchers and other staff members comprises three presemester workshops (dates: 29.01.25, 05.02.25, and 12.02.25) with in-semester individual coaching, observations, and teaching practice. At the end of this course, participants can
o efficiently prepare and confidently deliver lectures, seminars, and tutorials in English,
o confirm student uptake and understanding in frontal teaching situations such as lectures,
o quickly identify and repair misunderstandings in English dialogue with students,
o distinguish students’ problems with language from problems with subject understanding,
o deliver instructions for active learning tasks of varying complexity,
o practice a range of microteaching and active learning techniques in English,
o understand cultural differences in discourse structure and expectations,
o apply AI tools, especially LLMs, to help prepare for teaching, and
o evaluate their own and others’ pronunciation, vocabulary choices, speech patterns, and discourse structures.
