Title |
The role of social relationships for development during childhood and adolescence |
Description |
Development occurs in an interplay of genetic preconditions and environmental influences. Especially in infancy and early childhood, individuals depend on their primary caregivers to master developmental milestones. It is, therefore, evident that the process of development cannot be viewed in isolation from the context in which it occurs and the social relationships that are embedded within that context. While parents or other caregivers play a pivotal role in the early years of a child's life, other social relationships gain increasing relevance as the child matures. For example, play behavior in preschool children develops from non-social solitary play to more social forms of play. As children develop language and self-regulatory skills, they become increasingly engaged in social regulation. Relationships with peers are formed and become more meaningful. What is the relevance of these different social relationships for development in childhood and adolescence? What are the associated opportunities and risks? The proseminar provides an overview of various social relationships that can play a significant role in an individual's development.
Requirements: Attending the proseminar is highly demanding: Independent reading of the empirical literature, holding a short presentation in small groups, and continuous seminar attendance (max. 2 missed dates) are required. In the practical part of the course, a product (i.e., a short video, a flyer, or an article) will be developed. The evaluation includes a group presentation and the finalized product (incl. concept).
