Title |
Statistical thermodynamics I |
Description |
After briefly recalling the basic notions of mathematical statistics,
the framework of statistical mechanics is introduced. This leads to the
definitions of a partition function, entropy, and temperature. Subsequently
we transfer to the macroscopic picture of thermodynamics. Different
sets of variables and potentials are introduced, and illustrated with
the help of an ideal gas. The general concept of heat engines is
discussed in some detail. The chemical potential and the canonical
as well as the grand canonical ensemble are defined. The formalism is
applied e.g. to the study of phase transitions and statistical fluctuations. |
