| Title |
Colonial and Postcolonial Literatures: Writing (Against) Authority (BA FM and BA FS Seminar: Literature: Authority) |
| Description |
From the mid-17th until the mid-20th century, Britain ruled over an empire that became the largest in history, encompassing an array of peoples, cultures and landscapes. In this course, we will explore, firstly, how literature was involved in sustaining the ideological underpinnings of British global hegemony – in other words, how authority was established, but also complicated, through various kinds of texts. Secondly, we will look at literature produced in the aftermath of empire – literature that ‘writes back’ and thus plays a crucial role in re-imagining authority and its impact on people’s relations to each other and their environment. While our main focus will be on the British Empire, we will at times take a comparative approach, exploring how other nations established, represented and challenged authority overseas. In doing so, we will also address the significance of literary studies in championing cultural sustainability today.
Required Reading: E.M. Forster, A Passage to India; Joseph O’Neill, Netherland; Mirandi Riwoe, The Fish Girl. These novels will be made available for purchasing at LibRomania. Shorter texts will be made available on ILIAS. If you would like to receive a copy of The Fish Girl by email, please let me know. |
