| Title |
East Asian Environmental History |
| Description |
Environmental history is a field that concerns the interaction between humans and nature over time. This course offers an introduction to the history of environmental changes and crises in the East Asian context. It will engage with various humanities and scientific approaches to understanding and interpreting past climate-society interactions. By studying the interplay between natural forces and the economic, political and cultural dimensions of societies, this course unfolds various relevant topics. For instance, “natural disasters” are not “natural”. This challenges the long-standing mindset that conceptualizes “nature” and “society” as dichotomous entities.
The case studies chosen for class discussion span premodern East Asian societies, including China, Korea and Japan. A comparative lens will be applied to advance the comprehensive study of various themes, such as the common features of similar natural disaster events, how societies “contribute” to the seemingly “natural” environmental changes, and how such events might have brought transformative impacts on the societies in question, etc. Cases from the contemporary era and other regions will also be referenced for a better understanding of the relevant themes when needed. The course consists of lectures, discussions and exercises. Students will be asked to work on a theme-related historical case study and prepare an oral presentation and a written report on it |
