| Title |
Our World in Numbers: Data, Statistics, and the Stories They Tell |
| Description |
Taught by Ani Baghumyan:
This course introduces students to basic numerical literacy within the context of the social sciences, specifically media and communication studies. It provides key concepts that enable students to think critically about data and numbers in news, narratives, and research.
Data is not inherently objective; it can be framed to support contrasting interpretations. Students will read critical texts on data, statistics, categorization, and related topics. Through practical exercises, they will replicate selected research using available datasets to examine whether their conclusions differ from the original findings. Furthermore, they will work with datasets cited in news sources, investigating the ways in which identical data can be interpreted and framed to support different perspectives and tell different stories.
