Title Methods and Power: Social Science in the Age of Epistemic Sabotage
Description In today’s world of growing polarization and “post-truth” politics, social scientists face new challenges in how knowledge is produced and used. This course explores how research methods can both question and reinforce systems of power, encouraging students to think critically about the politics behind everyday methodological choices. Students will examine how research design, data collection, analysis, and communication become deeply political acts, shaping not only knowledge production but also its role in policymaking and societal change. The course is organized into three interactive parts. First, we introduce and discuss key theoretical debates around objectivity, neutrality, epistemic injustice, and positionality, exploring how these concepts reveal the political nature of methodological choices and shape the way we design and interpret research. In the second part, we engage critically and in depth with a range of social science methods – from big data and surveys to interviews and discourse analysis – using real-world case studies on far-right and anti-gender movements to reflect on how methods can serve both emancipatory and oppressive purposes. Finally, in a hands-on workshop phase, students will develop their own research designs, practicing how to navigate ethical challenges, reflect on limitations and methodological pitfalls, and communicate research effectively in a polarized environment marked by epistemic sabotage and political contestation.
