Title |
How to Operationalize Culture |
Description |
In this seminar, we will familiarize ourselves with different ways to measure/operationalize culture. To do so, we will read and discuss a selection of studies that represent different attempts to capture cultural meanings. This includes conceptual works marking the intersection between hermeneutic and structural/quantitative approaches and substantive works employing techniques such as survey analysis, network analysis, textual modelling, etc. In doing so, these works touch on a variety of substantive topics ranging from tastes, values, poverty, to literary works and more. Familiarity with reading quantitative research is helpful, but our discussion will focus on thinking through the methodological consequences and possibilities of the different attempts. The seminar is thus also suitable for folks interested in the study of culture who want to understand newer, sociological approaches to culture. The quantitative study of culture is clearly one of the most exciting developments in the sociology over the last two decades and, due to the availability of new forms of data, undoubtedly also one in which we can expect major progress to be made
