Description |
Child maltreatment and neglect are established risk factor for psychological distress, substance use, mental disorders and medical conditions over the lifespan. The first part of this course covers the frequency and subtypes of child maltreatment as well as risk factors such as parental psychopathology or addiction. The primary focus of the course is on the biological, cognitive, emotional and social consequences of child maltreatment. Risk mechanisms such as gene-environment interactions, differential susceptibility, emotion regulation and social processing models will be presented. Finally, presentations include coping with child maltreatment, protective factors and resilience patterns as well as recognising, intervening and preventing child abuse.
Requirements: Each participant is expected to prepare one session including a talk and a practical part (e.g. films, discussions, or exercises). An additional requirement is the regular attendance of the course (only two justifiable absences) and active contribution during the sessions. |
