Title Empathie und therapeutische Präsenz in der Psychotherapie
Description Across therapeutic orientations, empathy is considered to be central to psychotherapy. In this seminar, we will discuss various definitions of empathy and how they are realized in different therapeutic approaches. Beginning with the definition according to Rogers and in client-centered approaches, we will consider the role of empathy in terms of psychodynamic,, cognitiv-behavioral and emotion-focused therapeutic processes. Neurobiological aspects of empathy, relevant scientific findings and questions relating to whether and how empathy can be acquired through training will also be considered. Related constructs, including therapeutic presence and their importance for the therapeutic process will also be discussed.

In various small and large group exercises, the abilities of participants for empathy and self-empathy will be explored, refined and trained. Video analyses will be employed to demonstrate instants of empathy in the context of psychotherapy, and to explore various empathic responses in work with clients. Roleplay will be used to provide opportunities to experience settings bearing similiarities with client work.

Participants are expected to actively and openly participate in the group work in a way that allows empathic exchange. In addition, a short presentation (20min) or similar group exercise should be prepared and presented. Reading of relevant background literature, as well as preparation of content ahead of t e seminar are also required. The seminar is pass/fail, subject to presence at the seminars, active participation in group exercises and discussions, as well as preparation of the group presentation.
