What makes a good therapeutic relationship? – Discussion seminar |

The therapeutic relationship has proven to be an important variable in psychotherapy research over various methods and decades. The number of studies on the correlation between therapy relationship and outcome (outcome) is very large and the extent of the correlations seems to be relatively constant with effect sizes of approximately r = .3. However, it seems to be less clear what constitutes qualitatively good therapy relationships. Some established measuring instruments (such as the 3RS by Eubanks, Muran, & Safran, 2015) seem to describe events such as Alliance Ruptures as a deviation from a good therapeutic relationship, with studies showing that these ruptures occur in any therapy, if not almost every session. Another example of developments that refer to important processes within good therapeutic relationships: Phenomena such as counter-transference and the possible involvement and co-responsibility of therapists in transmission phenomena are nowadays discussed far differently from when the conceptual work on the theories began.
The aim of this discussion seminar is to consider different perspectives on the question: What makes a good therapy relationship? Accordingly, at the end of the semester it should be possible for the participants to describe what a good therapeutic relationship could look like, for example, based on the behavior of therapists or patients. The focus is therefore on the one hand on imparting knowledge about the therapeutic relationship and on the other hand on the critical examination of the research methods and contents of the studies, which are discussed together.
The performance review will take place after the seminar as part of a small paper of max. 5 pages (excl. title page and literature). Participation in the discussions will not be evaluated, but the individual dates will be structured with a main focus on discussions and, where appropriate, supplementary role plays (for example to recreate conflicts in the therapy relationship). |
