Title |
Suicidality |
Description |
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 800`000 people die due to suicide every year worldwide. This means, every 40 seconds someone in the world dies from suicide. In Switzerland, the aver-age suicide rate of 13 suicides per 100`000 inhabitants is slightly above the international average. However, worldwide suicide attempts are up to 20 times more frequent than completed suicides. Moreover, it is assumed that the number of suicide attempts and lethal suicides will increase in the next few years.
In this seminar we shall put our focus on aetiological models explaining suicidality as well as neurobiological correlates of suicidal behaviour. Further, we will discuss the relationship between different psychological disor-ders and suicidality and have a closer look at efforts for suicide prevention and different treatment approaches for suicide attempters. Moreover, we will talk about the influence that the media - especially the social media - has on suicidality.
It is expected, that students regularly attend the seminar (not more than 2 excused absences), read empirical literature weekly and take an active part in the discussions. There will be no final exam. Students will be required to give a presentation and develop their own suicide prevention project in small groups. The final grade is based on the presentation and the group work. |
