Title Borderline personality disorder in adolescence
Description The borderline personality disorder (BPD) constitutes a common and severe mental disorder which comes along with severe functional impairments and high suicide rates. Moreover, it is often associated with additional comorbid mental disorders, particularly with affective or anxiety disorders. Despite the general assumption that personality disorders usually develop during childhood and adolescence, the diagnosis of BPD under the age of 18 has for a long time been controversially discussed. In the light of recent scientific evidences, this controversy does not seem justified anymore. The seminar aims at presenting evidence of the last 10 years of research regarding the reliability and validity of the diagnosis of BPD and epidemiological data and will focus on an early detection of BPD during adolescence. Moreover, the dimensional model of personality pathology, which has been proposed in the DSM-5 (section 3) will be discussed. Subsequently the students will get to know specific methods of interventions, which will be practiced by means of role-playing and supplemented by case presentations. Therapeutic interventions will focus on the principles and modules (stress regulation; emotion regulation; interpersonal skills; self-esteem) of dialectic behavioral therapy for adolescents (DBT-A). Students should attend the seminar regularly, should read selected scientific papers and should be willing to autonomously prepare parts of the seminar. The learning progress will be controlled with a final exam.
