Title |
The Theory and Empirics of Global Environmental Politics |
Description |
This course focuses on designing research in Global Environmental Politics and on preparing students to implement respective projects. At the same time, the seminar introduces the theory and empirics of international environmental paradigms and regimes. It begins with an overview of the conceptual overview of the environmental movement and the historical development of international environmental regimes. In class, we discuss several important environmental regimes, such as the Montreal Protocol, the Brundtland Report of 1989, the Rio Declaration of 1992, the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, or the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in detail. Moreover, we study theoretical approaches on international cooperation, (environmental) international regimes, and global governance to discuss, infuse, and understand these historical developments from a political science perspective. Specifically, the seminar dives into the world of institutions, actors, and regime effectiveness. The students will paradigmatically learn how international regimes are designed and organised and how interests are distributed across key players. This should sharpen their comprehension of observable deadlocks in international negotiations and the difficulties specific to environmental topics. The students are expected read and deal with recent and relevant literature in the field, to give a talk on one of the topics outlined in the course syllabus and to develop and write a research proposal on a self-selected topic related to the course content and the presented theories. The students will work in groups of 3 to 4 to sharpen their team working skills.
The seminar and student presentations are to be held in English. However, if all participants are fluent German speakers, the language can be changed to German. Papers can be written in German or English.
