Title |
Early detection and intervention for borderline personality disorder |
Description |
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder that affects approximately 1.5%-3% of youth in the general population and leads to suffering in those affected by the disorder and their relatives, comprehensive and persistent functional impairments and high suicide rates. Even though personality disorders are thought to have their roots in childhood and early adolescence, there has been resistance against diagnosing BPD before the age of 18 years. In the light of the current evidence, this is no longer justified. The current seminar gives an overview about the scientific evidence regarding epidemiology and early detection of BPD. Additionally, the alternative dimensional model for personality disorder introduced by the DSM-5 section III will be discussed, using BPD as an example. Finally, participants of the seminar will learn about early interventions for BPD, such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A).
The seminar will be held as a block seminar. Requirements for the seminar include active participation in group discussions, reading and presenting selected papers, and passing a final exam. |
