412073-HS2020-0-RNA Biology II

Root number 412073
Semester HS2020
Type of course Lecture
Allocation to subject Molecular Life Sciences
Type of exam Written exam
Title RNA Biology II
Description This lecture series covers aspects of RNA biology related to various non-coding RNAs as well as their use as drugs to treat diseases. The topics include miRNA & piRNA biogenesis and function, small ncRNAs involved in genome regulation, regulatory roles of long non-coding RNAs and tRNA import. The aim of these lectures is to provide a comprehensive overview of the field of RNA Biology for MSc and PhD students. The NCCR RNA & Disease offers the unique chance to have lectures taught by leading experts in the field from six Swiss research institutions covering a wide range of aspects of RNA biology & RNA therapeutics.

Content:
Micro RNAs; micro RNA function in metabolism; biogenesis and function of piRNAs; long non-coding RNAs; nucleic acid-based drugs; ncRNA-mediated genome regulation; epigenetic programming of genome remodeling in ciliates; telomerase and telomeres; tRNA biology.

NOTE:
The lecture series "RNA Biology II" (fall 2020) and "RNA Biology I" (fall 2021) can be attended in any particular order and do not interdepend on each other.

***Format of the lecture in fall 2020***
Based on the current Covid rules of the University of Bern the lecture series will take place under special circumstances:
• The lecture series is planned as on-site teaching event
• The first on-site lecture will be given on Sept 24th
• registration via the KSL system is obligatory
• to enter and exit the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (DCB) wearing masks is obligatory for everybody
• depending on the number of students attending, it could be possible to keep the minimally required social distance of 1.5 m in the lecture room EG.16. Under these conditions the masks can be removed during the lectures
• if the 1.5 m distance rule cannot be satisfied (this will be the case if more than 35 students attend the lecture), wearing masks during the lecture is obligatory for the students
• Students who decline wearing masks in case this becomes necessary (see above), have to leave the lecture room and the DCB
• Students with possible Covid symptoms (e.g. fever, cough, etc ) are not allowed to attend the lecture. The lecturer has the right and the obligation to remove those students from the lecture room and the DCB.
• Adaptations to these rules are possible during the semester. Thus please always check for updates on ILIAS & KSL!
