Title |
Introduction to R for social sciences |
Description |
The digitalization of society has led to an increase in data availability for social science research. Along with this development computational social science has gained in importance. At the same time, data analysts have become increasingly important outside academic research in the field of Big Data analysis. Social science researchers and data analysts apply web crawling, web scraping, or text mining to collect data and rely on computational methods to analyse this data (e.g. regression analysis, social network analysis, machine learning etc.).
The programming language R is a powerful tool to collect and analyse quantitative data. This block seminar introduces into R and R Studio and focuses on R basics, data import and export, data manipulation, and basic data analysis and visualization. At the same time, the course will provide a first overview on wide spectrum of applications of quantitative data analysis within and beyond social science research.
Students will work on their own laptops and will be informed about the needed software via E-Mail.
Students that are enrolled in the following courses will be preferred: «Computational Social Science: Methods and Applications», «Communication Network Analysis» and «Environmental Policy I: Climate Policy Networks».
Prerequisites:
No prior knowledge of R is needed. Basic knowledge about statistics (descriptive statistics, inference, regression) is an asset. English is the main language of instruction.
Inscription:
from August 15th 2020, onwards via ILIAS
Form of implementation:
The course takes place in the first week of the semester as block course via Zoom. Intro sessions will be provided as podcasts. In practical hands-on sessions students will solve exercises alone or in small self-organized groups.
The block course will be thought following the general structure:
Mornings 9:15 to 11:45
Self-organized learning
- readings / script
- pod casts
- exercises
Afternoons 14:15 to 13:45
Interactive sessions via Zoom
- Solutions to exercises will be presented
- Q & A
Students will be shuffled into 2-3 groups by the lecturers for interactive sessions. |
