Title Cultural Geography I: Places of Globalisation
Description The lecture takes different places of globalization as its point of departure, and from these places, it looks at various themes and current theories of cultural geography. Starting from the global Bern, political institutions of globalization (UN) as well as critics (social protest) and “losers” of globalization (voting booth) are discussed. Globalization also brings with it increased mobility, which manifests itself in refugee accommodation, the shifting of border areas and special economic zones close to the border (maquiladoras). The cultures of globalization are expressed in major global sporting events (stadium) as well as in the social and racial inequalities on the periphery (Banlieu). Specific technologies support the global spread of social processes, values and patterns: from digital social media geography (Instagram) to technologies for reproducing human life and producing health (laboratory). Globalization thus also intervenes in areas of the intimate and private spheres: the global spread of beauty ideals (beauty salon) and their coupling with discourses on race, skin color, etc. and global care work that takes care of people in their homes are examples of the intimate geographies of globalization.

*** COVID-19: The lecture will be held as a digital lecture. Students will be provided with the 45 minutes of input as videocasts together with work assignments for each session in advance via ILIAS.
