Title Clinical Psychology in children and adolescents – Basics
Description Mental disorders in adulthood often begin in childhood and adolescence, have a high likelihood of persistence and are associated with substantial psychosocial impairments. Furthermore, they are risk factors for the development of comorbid or other mental disorders in adulthood. Therefore, childhood and adolescence is regarded as an important stage of life for psychological interventions with the aim to have a beneficial effect on the course and developmental as early as possible. Against this background, this lecture will provide an overview on Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology including core concepts and theories, basic competencies (building positive therapeutic relationship, conversation techniques), diagnostic classification of mental disorders in this age-group and explanation and interventions models for mental disorders highly prevalent in children and adolescents. Moreover, participants will acquire specific knowledge about how developmental aspects should be taken into account when carrying out evidence-based interventions for children and adolescents. In the second part of this lecture (Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy in children and adolescents, FS 2020), this basic knowledge on diagnostics and interventions will be deepened by applying them in various mental disorders in children and adolescents.

This part of the lecture will be completed with a written exam (MC-questions).

A podcast will be available.
