Understanding Social Anxiety and Its Treatments |
| Description |
Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by a marked fear of negative evaluation in social situations and avoidance of social activities. It is the third most common psychiatric disorder and is associated with significant impairments for individuals and their surroundings. In this block seminar we will study (1) the cognitive, behavioral and emotional processes of SAD, (2) the epidemiology of SAD and known differences and similarities of SAD across cultures, (3) the main etiological and developmental hypotheses of SAD (genetics and environmental), (4) the psychological assessment of SAD, (5) the main evidence-based treatment principles and treatment components (e.g., psychoeducation, cognitive-restructuring, attention training, mindfulness, social skills training, exposure), and (6) the main evidence-based psychological treatments for SAD in several formats (e.g., individual psychotherapy, group therapy, internet-based interventions). |
