Title |
An introduction in the analyses of fMRI data |
Description |
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is an important method to study neurophysiological correlates of psychological decision-making processes and phenomena. In this application-oriented method exercise, the basic steps of analyzing such fMRI data using the SPM 12 analysis software will be taught.
In the first two thirds of the seminar the necessary theoretical concepts and methods will be explained by the lecturer and practiced by the students. Concepts covered include pre-processing of fMRI data, models and statistical analyses at the individual and group level, statistical inference, visualization of results and batch programming.
In the last third of the seminar, the students work on a concrete research question from the field of social neuroscience in small groups (project work). An interesting fMRI data set on social and emotional decision-making processes will be made available for this purpose. With this fMRI data set, students will independently perform, interpret and visualize analyses at the group level. They will be supported by individual coaching from the lecturer. At the end of the seminar the students will present the results of their project work. To ensure that there is enough time for the project work, the presentations of the project work will take place in the official examination week in January (a 3 h appointment).
Important: The methods seminar is only suitable for students who are very motivated to learn this complex brain physiological method and are also willing to study it intensively. This is a demanding and time-consuming methods course.
Important: An own laptop (either Mac or Windows) with at least 20 GB free disk space (an external hard drive is also possible) and at least 8 GB RAM is required. A special version (with some extras) of SPM 12 is provided for the seminar, which can also be used after the end of the course. All necessary information for downloading and installing SPM 12 and the brain data will be given in the first seminar hour.
Prior knowledge:Basic knowledge in experimental design, statistics (SPSS, R or Jamovi) and brain anatomy is required. Good computer skills are also required. Programming skills are not required, but an advantage. The necessary knowledge will be taught during the course.
Requirements to obtain the 5 ECTS are:
• Attendance (and active participation) at the seminar dates (a maximum of two absences is allowed). Important note: The individual lessons build strongly on each other, consequently as few lessons as possible should be missed.
• Performing the (complex) brain physiological exercises
• Conducting the project work
• Presentation of the project work |
