Social cognition in mental disorders in children and adolescents |

A number of mental disorders are characterised by impairments in social cognition (theory of mind, emotion recognition, empathy, social perception and social attributions). These include, for example, borderline personality disorder, psychoses, depression, social phobia, eating disorders, social behaviour disorder or developmental deviations such as autism spectrum disorders and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Corresponding deficits can also be found in cases of impairments that are not predominantly mental, for example amyothrophic lateral sclerosis. Impairments in social cognition also seem to be caused by substance abuse (drug use). Various aetiological aspects are held responsible for these deficits.
The aim of the seminar is to first gain an overview of the typical development and characteristics of social cognition in humans, including a clarification of terms. Then we will look at psychological and other disorders in which social cognition and perception deviate from the typical development. Through discussion of the literature, we will gain an overview of etiological aspects and treatment approaches. This gives the participants an understanding of which mental disorders and developmental deviations have which forms of deficits in social cognition and perception, what their causes are and how they can be treated. In small groups, we focus on various parameters of the disorders (abnormalities in neuroanatomy and/or brain functions, possible causes, type of impairment of social cognition, etc.) and then compile the knowledge in discussion groups. Through this overview, the participants will be able to understand which (specific) role social cognition plays in individual disorders and also across the board. |
