Title |
Reducing social discrimination |
Description |
Social discrimination is inappropriate behavior toward individuals based on their membership in a certain social group. The focus of the seminar is the critical examination of theoretical explanations of discrimination as well as measures to reduce social discrimination. The seminar will first address psychological processes that enable discrimination. Next, it will clarify which people are prone to discrimination and how discrimination is perceived from the perspective of those being discriminated against. The second block of the seminar presents different forms and consequences of social discrimination, such as ethnic discrimination, sexism, or ageism. The third block covers interventions used to reduce discrimination - self-regulation, intergroup contact, or collective action. In each seminar, students will present and critically evaluate existing intervention campaigns to reduce specific forms of discrimination. Finally, possible applications of knowledge about reducing social discrimination in everyday life will be discussed. |
