Title Introductory Seminar Course Institute of Information Systems (Dpt. Information Engineering)
Description The digital transformation, which is often described as the application of digital technology in all aspects of human society, comes with many promises. Countries hope for increased wealth, businesses for enhanced productivity, and individuals for new ways to connect with friends and colleagues. However, the digital transformation also sparks fears. For example, privacy may be undermined or get lost. Some even fear that machines will take over and that with their support, humans are increasingly manipulated and controlled. In any case, digital transformation comes along with changes that can span from changes of workplaces and business processes to changes of entire business models, industries and value chains. Thus, the increasing digitalization can result in great benefits, but may also generate novel tensions, such as between humans and machines, within innovation processes, within and across organizations and in the emergence of new digital platforms and ecosystems.
This seminar seeks to address contemporary challenges related to the digital transformation and how firms and individuals can excel in this change process. Students can select among various topics that shed light on different aspects of the digital transformation. This includes topics on the successful management of transformation projects, the control of self-learning systems, and the use of innovative technology to digitize and automate work processes (e.g., through chatbots or Blockchain). Students can select among various topics and methodological approaches, such as reviewing the literature, theorizing with illustrative cases, and conducting case study research.
