Title The Policy and Politics of Migration
Description Lecturer: Théoda Woeffray

Migration has already been a central component of European politics for several years, also due to the arrival of several thousand refugees in 2015 and, more recently, people fleeing war in Ukraine. The course “The Policy and Politics of Migration” explores the challenges posed by migration, how European states address them and what influences the different policy responses.

Students will first be introduced to the main concepts of migration. They will also be familiarized with the European migration regime, its policies (e.g., Schengen, Common European Asylum System, Dublin Agreement), and the relevant EU institutions and its policy-making process. Against this background, the seminar will focus on refugee migration and the main challenges it has brought to the European construction.

Further, the course presents and discusses the actions on the European level that have or have not been taken in response to these challenges. Finally, the seminar will dive deeper into the politics of migration by focusing on how the interests and preferences of the different actors, such as the Member states, are being shaped.

Through the assignments in the course, students will learn to critically reflect on and discuss the responses to the challenges posed by migration. Additionally, students will acquire skills to read, understand, compare, and critically reflect on academic articles.
