Title Deliberate Practice - Evidence-based ways of maintaining and improving psychotherapeutic skills
Description The expertise of therapists is on a continuum from very inexperienced to very expert (Hill, et al., 2017, p. 10). However, many therapists regularly overestimate their effectiveness - by about 65% on average (Miller, Hubble, & Duncan, 2007; Walfish, McAlister, O'Donnell, & Lambert, 2012). Traditional psychotherapeutic training courses often do not focus on the individual development of therapeutic expertise and tend to place more emphasis on theory than on actual competence as well as the development of procedural knowledge. In addition, after completion of their training therapists often do not have the time to further develop their therapeutic skills in therapeutic practice. They seldom receive feedback from supervisors, rarely record therapy sessions on video or share their protocols/recordings of past therapy sessions with other therapists. In contrast, Deliberate Practice (DP) training activities are individualized and aim to improve and refine certain aspects of therapeutic competence through expert feedback, repetition and gradual refinement, and to maintain these throughout the professional career (Ericsson & Lehmann, 1996). In the seminar, participants learn the basics and principles of DP, deepen these in selected practical exercises and work on empirical studies on the development of therapeutic competence and the effectiveness of DP.
