Title |
Introduction to social neuroscience |
Description |
Social neuroscience investigates the neurobiological basis of social behavior, thinking and feeling. Accordingly, social neuroscience is an interdisciplinary research field that combines and integrates methods and concepts from social psychology and cognitive and affective neuroscience and related disciplines. This proseminar offers an introduction to this relatively young and emerging field of research.
In the proseminar, we will first familiarize ourselves with the theoretical and methodological approaches of social neuroscience. We will then delve into the evolutionary origins of social intelligence and look at various social phenomena (e.g. reading faces and bodies, friendships and love relationships, social isolation, anger and aggression) and examine how these phenomena are mediated by neural mechanisms. Conversely, we will also discuss how social experiences and environmental factors can affect brain development and function.
In the course of the seminar, we will critically evaluate findings from social neuroscientific studies and discuss the implications for understanding human behavior and society.
