Title Early detection and intervention for borderline personality disorder
Description Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder that affects approximately 1.5%-3% of adolescents and young adults in the general population and is associated with high levels of distress for those affected and their families, persistent psychosocial functional impairment and high suicide rates. The diagnosis in adolescents is still controversial, resulting in undertreatment, maltreatment or late treatment. The seminar will present and discuss current scientific evidence on the development, course, diagnosis (including the new dimensional approaches in DSM-5 and ICD-11) and treatment of BPD in adolescents. In addition, an introduction to Dialectical-Behavioural Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) as one of the evidence-based treatments for BPD in adolescents will be given using case studies and practical exercises.
The seminar will be offered as a block course. Students are expected to actively participate in the seminar, read selected scientific papers, prepare specific parts of the seminar and take a final exam.
It is only possible to attend either the seminar "Early recognition and treatment of borderline personality disorder" or the seminar "Non-suicidal and suicidal self-injurious behaviour in the context of borderline personality disorder in adolescence".
