Title Non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal behavior in the context of borderline personality disorder during adolescence
Description With an estimated prevalence rate of 18%, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) constitutes a major health problem among adolescents worldwide. Previous research further provided evidence for the predictive value of NSSI as a risk marker for suicidal behavior. Frequently, NSSI serves as a dysfunctional strategy for emotion regulation, which might explain its close connection to the borderline personality disorder (BPD). In the seminar, students will learn about theoretical models and diagnostic criteria of NSSI, suicidal behavior and BPD during adolescence and about related scientific findings. Subsequently, students will learn about specific interventions and practice by means of case studies and role-plays. In the seminar, we will particularly focus on the therapeutic approach of dialectical behavioral therapy for adolescents (DBT-A) by giving insights into the modules of stress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal relationships, self-esteem and “walking the middle path”. Another focus will be on the handling and management of chronic suicidality among adolescents.
The students will be expected to regularly and actively participate in the seminar, to read selected articles and to autonomously prepare for the seminar. The contents of the seminar will further be tested in a written exam at the end of the seminar.
