Title Research Seminar: European Politics and Swiss EU Relations
Description In this research seminar, students learn the basics in respect to political science research methods, become (more) familiar with R, and study conventional datasets (e.g., Eurobarometer, Chapel Hill Expert Survey, and Selects). We will cover several methods, such as standard regressions, hierarchical modeling, time-series-cross-section, and also discuss qualitative approaches. The seminar will focus on the conceptual understanding of the different methodological approaches, the hands-on application of the quantitative methods, and the discussion and interpretation of the empirical findings of cutting-edge research. Students will thus further deepen their skills as empirical researchers by applying state-of-the-art methods. To this end, they are expected to have prior methodological and statistical knowledge. Substantively, the seminar will cover European politics and Swiss-EU relations – but the perspective of the seminar will be predominantly methodological. As such, this research seminar is an ideal follow-up after the successful completion of either the seminar on European politics or Swiss-EU relations. This is not a formal prerequisite. Rather, this sequence of seminars is advised for the systematic structuring of the MA studies. Also, this research seminar provides the necessary training for the elaboration and execution of the MA thesis and can thus be planed as preparatory course for this final task of the MA studies. Students actively participate in the seminar, hand-in method exercises, discuss the methodological approach and findings of a research paper, and conduct an empirical study as seminar paper.
