Title Postsecular Lab: What changes if religions stay?
Description About two centuries ago, the idea that religion was a discontinued model began to become part of European thought. In addition to atheistic Marxism, the so-called "three-stage law" developed by the French sociologist Auguste Compte became particularly influential. According to him, human thought and society pass through three successive stages: the theological stage, the metaphysical stage, and the positive stage.

But religion returned early on: the theology that Marx had declared obsolete early on reappeared to him later in the "theological nicetie" of commodity; and the late Compte even developed a "religion of humanity." In the meantime, the continued existence of religions is no longer to be doubted. One therefore speaks of a "post-secular" age.

This raises new questions: What influence does this have on a secular self-image? Was secularization a European special path that for a time was confused with a global development? Is the relativization of the secular an expression of a decolonization of a Western self-understanding? What consequences does the relativization of the secular have for global politics and interreligious relations? In a word: What changes if the religions remain?

These questions will be investigated in the first "Postsecular Lab" (PL).

The PL is emphasized practice-oriented, experimental and inter- and transdisciplinary. The goal is that the students, optimally in small groups, independently invite experts from different disciplines (preferably from the University of Bern) during the course of the course and examine and deepen post-secular questions with them from different thematic perspectives. You will develop the questions, moderate the discussion and prepare the results for the blog IRS.

This teaching event is a teaching event that is funded within the framework of FIL_FLE (Förderung Innovative Lehre - Fakultäre Lehrentwicklung). With the "Postsecular Lab", the topic of post-secularity is to be integrated into the IRS degree programme.
