Title |
Christian Theology and the Dialogue with Islam |
Description |
What are the aims and challenges when Christian theologians start talking with representatives from other religions? What are the issues and implications for theology as a consequence of engaging in dialogue with those of another faith?
The Übung address questions and challenges raised for Christian theology and practice by dialogue with Muslims and examines issues about how Christian-Muslim dialogue is theorized and practised. It will take up the experiences from two significant and long-running Christian-Muslim dialogue processes, namely “Building Bridges” and “Theologisches Forum Christentum – Islam” and look at the substance of the theological topics engaged in their respective dialogue events.
Professor Douglas Pratt, Anglican theologian from New Zealand and since 2011 adjunct research professor at the Institut für Christkatholische Theologie, will discuss insights from his book, Contemporary Christian–Muslim Dialogue, and related research. He will be present at the classes on 18 September, and 16, 23 and 30 October, and 6 November.
Included as part of the Übung will be a hybrid International Symposium on 3 November, where Christian scholars with expertise in different theological disciplines, and with some input from Muslim scholars, will reflect on their experience of Christian-Muslim dialogue. Further information may be found on the Symposium programme flyer.
Following the symposium, Übung students will reflect upon and evaluate main insights from the symposium and the content of the Übung discussions, and develop their own topics for the assessment essay. To assist in this, further classes led by Dr David Marshall will take place on 13 and 20 November 2022.
Literature: Douglas Pratt, Contemporary Christian-Muslim Dialogue: two twenty-first century initiatives (London: Routledge, 2021; 2022 pbk). Copies of this book and a list of further reading will be available for participants in the first session.
