Title |
Why is psychological science so hard? On biases, challenges, and pitfalls |
Description |
Many researchers in psychology try to study and understand the human mind without full awareness of the biases, challenges, and pitfalls that can undermine their conclusions. Psychological science, like all sciences, rests on various assumptions. For example, the assumption that the measures used are accurate and unbiased is necessary for the conclusions drawn based on the results to be valid. Psychology classes are often focused on the various findings that explain the human mind. Far too little attention is given to the issues that can undermine these findings. As a result, many students, experienced researchers, and even professors in psychological science, remain unaware of the critical assumptions that underpin all that they do. This class provides an overview of some common issues in psychological science that make studying the human mind very difficult and uncertain.
