Title |
Advanced Plant Biology: Plant-Herbivore Interactions |
Description |
Lecture and practical course.
2nd - 5th week of the semester.
Lecture: Monday 13-15 and Thursday 9-11. Practical course: Thursday 11-17 and Friday 9-17.
Lunch break by arrangement.
Lecture: Plants interact above and below ground with a wide variety of insects. The nature of these interactions - from beneficial insects to pests - determines the growth of plants and ultimately the yield of agricultural crops. The lecture deals with such interactions and discusses the most important aspects of plant-herbivore interactions in the ranges between beneficial insect and pest and from gene to ecosystem. We discuss the communication and defense mechanisms available to plants and how pests adapt to these strategies. We integrate these topics and discuss what this means for agricultural cultivation.
Internship: The internship deepens the topics of the lecture through a series of experiments. We focus on experiments that explore the limits of current knowledge and can thus also provide new scientific insights. Students investigate how plants defend themselves against insect pests and how beneficial insects are affected by them. Students will learn a wide range of practical methods, as well as the scientific approach from hypothesis to critical analysis and interpretation of the data. |
