Title BA Lecture SP1: An Introduction to Islam and Islamic Studies
Description The format of this class is that of the lecture and is thought to provide beginner students with a space where they can be introduced (by attending a series of talks by a lecturer) to the key texts, beliefs and practices of the religion of Islam. The course also provides a general overview on some major intellectual debates in Islamic Studies and an introduction to hermeneutics as a methodology of inquiry. The course begins with an examination of the rise of Islam, the life of its Prophet, and the concept of tawḥīd (the principle of God's unity and unicity). During the lecture the students will get familiar with topics related to the nature, history and content of the Qurʾān and the ḥadīth literature and particular aspects of Islamic ritual practice and belief, as well as the basics of religious law, theology, philosophy, and mysticism. The role of art and architecture in Islam will also be presented, as well as some contemporary debates on Islam from the perspective of Islamic feminist exegesis.
Despite the format of the class allowing mainly for frontal lessons, the students will be required to answer short (non-evaluated) questionnaires in class (to assess the understanding of specific topics), and to participate in a ‘logbook’ activity. At the beginning of the course, students will be divided into small groups (depending on the number of students). Each group will write a short response paper (logbook entry) of one class. The response paper will be of max. 2 pages, and will contain a summary of the topics discussed in class, and a short comment by the students. During the second-last class of the course, we will look together at the response papers in the logbook, in a catch-up activity aiming at reviewing together the learned material before the final exam. A written final exam will take place during the last regular class.
The lecture is accompanied by a Seminar (BA-Grundlagenseminar SP1: An Introduction to Islam and Islamic Studies). It is highly recommended to attend the lecture and the seminar together, especially for the students of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. The lecture allows the students to be introduced to basic concepts and intellectual debates, while attending the seminar provides a more interactive space where to better understand and reflect on them. Attending lecture and seminar together will enable the students to advance in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies in a sustainable way.
