Title |
Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Society |
Description |
Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) are changing our world. One the one hand this offers positive developments (e.g. in personalised medicine or more efficient agriculture), on the other hand there may be problematic (e.g. automatic detection of sexual orientation, predictive policing) or clearly negative developments, too (e.g. the loss of jobs, autonomous weapons, complete Orwellian-control, singularity). The seminar will explore what is and what is not currently possible in ML and AI. What is fairness in ML and AI? Should there be restrictions on research? Regulations?
Whilst the seminar is not a specific research methods seminar, it will cover ML and AI research methods and their statistical backgrounds. Generally the main aim is to to discuss the current situation and the open questions, for many of which there exist no correct answers (yet). Participants are encouraged to develop their own, knowledge-based opinions.
Suggested Reading: Original research papers and review articles will be distributed during the seminar.
