Title Digital Sustainability
Description The constantly growing possibilities of information technology have a significant impact on society and the economy. Digitalization creates new opportunities for communication and collaboration, but also poses new problems and challenges for mankind. The central theme of this event is sustainable development: How does digitalization threaten sustainability? How can digitalization be made more sustainable? And how can sustainable development be improved through the opportunities offered by digitalization?

Specifically, the Bachelor's lecture "Digital Sustainability" will look at the ecological and social aspects of sustainability in the context of digitalization. It also introduces the concept of digital sustainability, which shows how digital knowledge can be made accessible to society today and in the future. Furthermore, legal issues such as data protection and copyright are dealt with and ethical aspects of artificial intelligence are discussed. Finally, an in-depth look at open source software will show how numerous sustainability goals in computer science can be realized with this software development model.

The lecture will be enriched by numerous guest lectures from practice and science as well as by a field trip to DINAcon, the conference on digital sustainability in Bern. Following the two lecture lessons, central aspects of the content will be deepened in individual exercises and group discussions. On the last two dates of the lecture, students will present topics they have researched themselves that demonstrate the social relevance of computer science.
