Allocation to subject Geography
Type of exam Written exam
Title Limnology and Paleolimnology
Description The course introduces the major concepts in limnology and paleolimnology, focusing on the interactions between lakes, the catchments, the atmosphere and geologic underground. Lake physical, chemical and biological processes are introduced with regard to lake ecological functioning and sediment formation processes. This is the basis to introduce the 'paleolimnological approach' and a broad range of biogeochemical sediment proxies that can be used to reconstruct paleoenvironments and paleoclimates. The relevant statistical techniques in paleolimnology and geochronological methods for lake sediment dating are also discussed. One part of the lecture highlights the responses of lakes to climate and environmental change, including eutrophication and pollution.
