Title |
Methods seminar: Psychology in crisis? Replications and reform movements in psychological science |
Description |
With buzzwords like “replication crisis” and “open science”, psychology has been in an intense phase of self-reflection and discussion on the robustness of psychological research and its quality standards for the past 10 years. The primary reasons for this are failed replication attempts of previous research, as well as lacking transparency in the research process. Solutions that would change the research practices of psychologists include the preregistration of hypotheses, and are currently in a testing phase. Their primary goal is to increase transparency and verifiability of research, hoping that this would impact its quality, and ultimately improve psychological theories. The success remains to be seen, particularly because expectations tend to differ widely. While some speak of a revolution that will lead psychology out of a crisis, others see science as a trust-based forward-looking community threatened by blind actionism. |
