Title |
Communicating and Visualizing Data |
Description |
Each course day will contain a series of short lectures and demonstrations that introduce and discuss topics in data visualization and communication. The bulk of each day will be dedicated to hands-on, step-by-step exercises to help students ‘learning by doing’. In these exercises, students will learn how to read-in and prepare data, how to create various types of static and interactive data visualizations, how to tweak them to exactly fit one’s needs, and how to embed them in reports and presentations.
Each student will work on his or her own data visualization project turning an initial visualization sketch into a one-page academic paper featuring a polished, well-designed figure. Projects begin with handing-in a data visualization sketch presenting a key finding based on data from the student‘s own work or a public repository. Students present their visualization sketches to the group addressing critical questions, such as, what insight is to be communicated and what type of data visualization is best suited to do this, considering the intended audience. Students present their final data visualization to the group, competing for a prize awarded to the most compelling data visualization. Students finalize their data visualization and submit a one-page academic paper including title, text, references, figure annotation etc. as their final project. |
