Title Introduction to social neuroscience
Description Social Neuroscience offers exciting insights into the mechanisms that govern our thinking, feeling, and behaviour in social contexts. This interdisciplinary field of research combines social psychology with cognitive and affective neuroscience, opening up new perspectives on the dynamics of human relationships. The proseminar provides a fundamental introduction to this young and emerging research area and offers insights into its latest developments.

In the first half of the proseminar, we will focus on the basics of Social Neuroscience, its origins, and methodological approaches. We will explore the evolutionary roots of social intelligence, highlight the importance of emotions and motivation for social behaviour, and learn about the neural mechanisms that enable us to understand and interact with others.

The second half of the proseminar is dedicated to current developments and topics shaping the field. Together, we will explore the neural underpinnings of loneliness, the challenges of social interactions in the digital age, and the role of social dynamics in placebo effects. Additionally, we will examine unusual and fascinating topics such as the neurobiology of "cuteness" and "cuteness aggression," the relationship between humans and pets, and the impact of social inequality on the brain and the neural correlates of sustainable behaviour.

Through critical discussions and engagement with current research findings, we will highlight the significance of these insights for our understanding of human behaviour and societal developments.

Requirements for earning 4 ECTS credits:
- Active, engaged, and consistent participation with regular attendance (maximum of 2 absences)
- Timely completion of assignments (pass/fail)
- Designing a lesson (in groups of 2-3 people, 30-45 minutes, presentation and discussion leadership, 50% of the final grade)
- Timely submission of the performance assessment (50% of the final grade)

Performance assessment: In the second half of the proseminar, students will keep a reflection journal in which they critically reflect on the content of the lessons and relate it to other proseminar content, their studies, or their everyday lives. As part of a peer-review process, students will give each other feedback on the entries. At the end of the semester, a revised version of the reflection journal will be submitted and graded.
