Title |
Operando Methods in Sustainable Chemistry and Catalysis |
Description |
This course will provide an overview of state-of-the-art operando methods (synchrotron-based techniques, such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, and vibrational methods, such as infrared spectroscopy) and their application for investigating the reaction mechanisms of sustainable catalytic and energy-related processes. The possibilities and limitations of each method will be discussed and illustrated by examples from catalysis, electrocatalysis, and battery research. Various operando cells and setups will be demonstrated and critically reviewed.
The course consists of lectures at the University of Bern (6 weeks, 2 h lectures per week) and a practical part including a visit to the Paul Scherrer Institute, home of the Swiss large research facilities (1 Full day), and seminars at the University of Bern (6 weeks, 2 h seminars per week). Here you will see how to run an operando experiment, obtain hands-on experience in spectroscopic data analysis, and learn how to write competitive proposals for synchrotron beamlines.
