Title Social Psychology of Listening
Description Listening is one of the most important forms of human social behaviour. Individuals who are good listeners benefit across various aspects of life. Good listeners experience greater academic and professional success, enhanced mental well-being, improved health, increased popularity, and higher satisfaction in their relationships, among other advantages. Moreover, those to whom they listen also benefit. High quality listening not only improves the well-being of conversational partners, it also has a positive effect on their creativity and the quality of their speech. Recent research has additionally demonstrated that simply by listening in the right way, speakers can become clearer about their own attitudes and beliefs and also reduce their own prejudices. We will delve into some of these effects in greater detail at the outset of the seminar. In the main part, we will explore the following questions: What constitutes "good" or "proper" listening? Is there only one “correct” form of listening, or are different types of listening suitable depending on the situation? How can the quality of listening be assessed, and is it possible to deliberately train listening skills? In this exploration, we will review relevant literature and practically test various measurement methods and training approaches.
