Title |
To decipher and understand medieval political correspondence (includes paleography) |
Description |
The course introduces, on the basis of political letters of selected towns, late medieval paleography. From the 15th century onward, the number of letters (or Missiven) regulating political matters is growing exponentially. Archives number thousands of letters that often pertain to the same matter, follow each other closely, or are archived together with pertinent answers. They are very close to daily matters and allow insights into intents, decisions, questions, or fears of the correspondents. The new digital edition of the St. Gall political correspondence offers first insights into the rich world of late medieval political correspondence and opens the way to further exploring unpublished material from Bern or Solothurn. Look forward to being surprised! |
