Title |
Postbus – Mobile Phone – Gun – Uniform: Objects from the fields of communication, transport and the military as sources for the history of the 20th century between tangible evidence and material culture |
Description |
Although historians have repeatedly paid attention to historical material testimonies as museological items and as part of material culture, objects receive little attention as a source genre. This is quite paradoxical, because tangible material sources make history "snatch-able" with the hands, and even "seiz(e)-able" with all the senses. However, various aspects need to be considered in this context. These include the origin and genre-specific quality of a material source, its thematic reference and its context of use. To what extent they can be useful for academic research and to impart the knowledge of history in its various forms has to be clarified as well. The relationship of object sources to the ideas of material culture existing in other disciplines and in historical studies also plays an important role.
Based on the holdings of the Museum of Communication and the Historic Military Equipment Foundation (HAM) from the fields of communication,
transportation and the military, this course, designed as an exercise in history after 1800 and as an auxiliary scientific exercise, will deal with the topic described above. After an introductory theoretical and methodological discussion as well as an overview of the history of communication, transportation and the military in Switzerland, students, on the basis of research in collections and archives, will develop their own project on the topic. They will then prepare one or more biographies of objects and present these in the form of a scientific poster.
