Title |
Evidence-based assessment and psychological interventions for children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) |
Description |
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children and adolescents with a prevalence rate of 8%. It is characterized by persistent levels of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that significantly interfere with daily, academic, social, and professional functioning (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Children and adolescents with ADHD show significant impairments, such as lower academic outcomes and problems in social relationships. ADHD often goes along with high comorbidity rates and the prognosis is relatively poor if not treated effectively. In the current seminar, we will discuss: (a) the theoretical background regarding ADHD and the importance of evidence-based procedure, (b) the assessment of ADHD and differential diagnostics (comorbidities), (c) evidence-based interventions for ADHD, and (d) the application of evidence-based assessment and interventions in real-life case studies. Students will get the opportunity to practice important aspects of specific evidence-based assessments and interventions and will apply these techniques to real-life case studies, including the complete cycle from intake to assessment, intervention, and evaluation.
In the first part of this seminar, we will discuss the theoretical backgrounds of ADHD and its evidence-based assessment and interventions. In the second part of this seminar, we will highlight and practice specific aspects of an evidence-based planning and organization, and sleep training intervention for adolescents with ADHD. In the third part, students will be divided into groups. Within these groups they get real-life case studies on which they have to prepare a presentation (including, intake, assessment, interventions, and evaluation) and present this presentation to their peers in the classroom. Students will be asked to peer-review the presentations from other groups and write some critical reflections and suggestions. The seminar will be very interactive and there is room for own contributions and creativity.
